Hindi Typing Keyboard Layouts: Krutidev vs Mangal vs Remington GAIL

Published 15 June 2026

Hindi typing for government exams in Rajasthan can feel confusing because three different keyboard layouts are in common use — Krutidev 010, Mangal (Inscript), and Mangal (Remington GAIL). Each maps Hindi characters to different keys. Picking the wrong one to practice can cost you the exam.

This article explains exactly what each layout is, how they differ, and which one you should learn for RSMSSB LDC, HCRAJ LDC, and related Rajasthan government exams.

What Are These Layouts?

Hindi typing layouts define which physical key on your keyboard produces which Devanagari character. Unlike English (one standard layout), Hindi has multiple legacy and Unicode standards.

LayoutFontTypeKeys standard
Krutidev 010Krutidev (legacy)PhoneticNon-Unicode; older standard
Devlys 010Devlys (legacy)PhoneticVery similar to Krutidev
Mangal InscriptMangal (Unicode)InscriptGovernment standard since 2010
Mangal Remington GAILMangal (Unicode)TypewriterPopular in Rajasthan

Krutidev 010 (Legacy Phonetic)

Krutidev is the most widely used legacy Hindi font in Rajasthan exam centres. It is not Unicode — meaning the characters are actually English letters mapped to look like Hindi when rendered in the Krutidev 010 font. If you copy text typed in Krutidev and paste it elsewhere, it will appear as random English characters.

Who should learn Krutidev? Candidates who are preparing for exams that specifically mention Krutidev 010 on the admit card. Most Rajasthan government exam centres still use Krutidev. If your admit card is silent on the font, Krutidev is the safer default.

Skill transfer: If you already type in English QWERTY, Krutidev uses phonetic key mappings that feel somewhat natural (क = k, ग = g, ट = T, etc.). Most candidates can reach 20 WPM within two weeks of consistent practice.

Mangal Inscript (Unicode)

Inscript (Indian Script) is the Government of India standard keyboard layout for Hindi, adopted in 2010. It uses the Mangal Unicode font. Characters are arranged by phonetic family on the keyboard — vowels on the left, consonants on the right.

Who should learn Inscript? Candidates targeting central government exams (SSC CGL, CPCT, NIC) or those who want a future-proof skill. Some Rajasthan exam centres have shifted to Unicode — check your admit card.

Skill transfer: Inscript has a steeper learning curve than Krutidev because the key positions are less intuitive at first. Allow 4–6 weeks of consistent practice to reach 25+ WPM.

Mangal Remington GAIL (Unicode)

Remington GAIL is a Unicode layout modelled after the old mechanical Remington Hindi typewriter. Candidates who learned Hindi typing on a typewriter (or from someone who did) often find Remington GAIL the easiest to learn.

Who should learn Remington GAIL? Candidates whose families or coaches taught typing on a typewriter, or those in regions where Remington-style tutors are common. Many candidates in Rajasthan prefer Remington GAIL because local typing institutes teach it. MedhaV.in supports Remington GAIL — you can switch layouts from the typing setup screen.

Skill transfer: If you already know Krutidev, Remington GAIL has some overlap in key positions. The transition is typically 2–3 weeks of relearning.

Which Layout Should You Choose?

Follow this decision tree:

  1. Does your admit card specify a font? → Use that font, no exceptions.
  2. No font specified, exam is in Rajasthan? → Default to Krutidev 010. Most centres use it.
  3. Exam is central government (SSC/NIC/CPCT)? → Use Mangal Inscript.
  4. You learned on a typewriter or your institute teaches Remington? → Use Remington GAIL.

Do not try to learn all three. Pick one and practice it daily for 4–6 weeks before the exam.

How Fast Do You Need to Type?

For Rajasthan LDC exams (RSMSSB and HCRAJ):

Net speed = (total words typed − errors) ÷ time in minutes. Errors hurt your net speed, so accuracy matters as much as raw speed.

Most candidates can reach 30 WPM Hindi in 6–8 weeks with 15–20 minutes of daily practice.
